Weekly Devotional – Exodus 1 Shiphrah and Puah
Reading for the week of November 8th
I’m so glad you decided to join the Stars in a Dark World weekly devotional. For the first devotional we will be reading Exodus. On Tuesday, each week I will post my thoughts on the reading and then we can discuss your thoughts on the reading here in the comments or on the Facebook event page located at the following address for this week. Facebook Event Page
Most of the time you will find me focusing on only a few verses from the chapter. That in no way means those are the only verses you have to discuss. I want us to discuss the whole chapter if we have those wanting to discuss. The verses I pick to highlight here are just the ones that spoke to me that week.
Weekly Devotional – Exodus 1
So God was kind to the midwives and the people increased and became even more numerous. And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families of their own.
-Exodus 1:20-21 (NIV), emphasis added
Pharaoh feared the rise of the Hebrew nation living in Egypt but the two Hebrew midwives, Shiphrah and Puah feared God. If Pharaoh found out that these women had let the boys live he would have killed them. But Shiphrah and Puah feared God more than they feared death. They knew God would not want them to kill any of His chosen people and they had faith that He would protect them from Pharaoh. They also knew that God’s wrath was so much more powerful than anything Pharaoh could do and they chose to obey God instead of Pharaoh.
The Bible references fearing the Lord at least 144 times.
We are to fear God. I don’t know about you but I don’t think I fear God as much as I should. I see Him more as a loving Father than anything else and I tend to forget what He is capable of. He is God. He has the power to remove me from this earth if I step out of line. He can cause destruction on my life if I don’t do what He asks. And yet, I disobey and ignore His commands often.
We are to fear God. And for those who obey and fear Him, He promises that we will want for nothing.
Fear the Lord, you his saints,
for those who fear him lack nothing.
-Psalm 34:9 (NIV), emphasis added
He fulfills the desires of this who fear him;
he hears their cry and saves them.
-Psalm 145:19 (NIV), emphasis added
Fearing God means He will ensure we are taken care of. Look at Shiphrah and Puah’s lives. Because they feared God, he gave them the desires of their hearts; families, children. God makes the same promise to us that He fulfilled to Shiphrah and Puah. He will fulfill the desires of your heart if you fear Him
In what ways can you work toward fearing God? What desires to do you think He will fulfill if you follow His command and fear Him?
Head over to the Facebook Event Page to answer these question or to leave your thoughts on the reading. You can also leave your thoughts in the comments below. And be sure to read next weeks devotional found at the top of this post and check back on Tuesday for my thoughts on the Weekly Devotional.
